5 Expensive Bathroom Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them Before It’s Too Late)

What You Need To Know Before You Start On Your Bathroom Renovation

With numerous bathroom renovations under our belt, we've learned valuable lessons and developed guidelines that ensure every project delivers a beautiful, functional, and long-lasting result. The following advice will help you avoid costly repairs down the road.

Budget Tapware

Buying cheap mixers might save you money in the short term, but fixing a leak caused by cheap, low quality bathroom accessories is often an expensive task. Instead, invest in good quality basin, bath, and shower mixers made from premium materials like brass and stainless steel – most importantly are shower and bath mixers, as they are installed in the wall it can be an expensive exercise to replace them if they fail. These vital bathroom accessories function in a wet environment and quality materials will ensure their long-term dependability. Use NZ/AUS fixtures for ease of replacement parts.

Insufficient Waterproofing

Avoid costly repairs caused by insufficient waterproofing of your bathroom floors, showers, and bathtubs. Only use qualified waterproofers and always request a waterproofing certificate and warranty for the work on completion. If you’re installing tiles on wooden floors, make sure you install underlay first, or for concrete floors, the waterproofing membrane can be applied directly.

Pay special attention to corners during waterproofing and make sure there is a minimum 100mm overlap past the edges of baths, basins and showers.

bathroom reno tips - invest in a good quality tapware

Inadequate Ventilation (3 in 1 Fans)
Make sure you’ve installed a separate bathroom extractor fan that can efficiently remove moisture from your bathroom, this is essential to prevent mould and dampness, and needs to be vented outside the house and not into the roof cavity as this could cause long-term moisture and potentially future structural issues.  Consider connecting the fan directly to the lightswitch or even installing a timer switch, particularly for rental properties.

Installing Non-Water Resistant Plasterboard
Standard plasterboard (GIB) is not water-resistant and prolonged exposure to moisture will significantly shorten its life expectancy. At Max Style, we use Aqualine GIB for all bathroom installations to ensure durability in wet environments.

Insecure Wall Hung Vanities
Forgetting to install noggings – proper structural blocking behind the plasterboard –  results in potentially dangerous installation. Blocking distributes the vanity weight across a wider area. Without it, you risk damage to your plumbing or even the vanity falling off the wall entirely.
